It is commonly assumed – and frequently taught – that the role of the performer is to reproduce the composer’s notation as faithfully as possible. “Play what is written!” However, in Early Music especially, this assumption breaks down completely, as composers in the 17th and 18th Centuries mostly notated only the “raw” musical notes. Lars Ulrik explores a number of examples from different styles to illustrate the vital role of the stylistically aware performer in creating a living, spontaneous and contemporary musical environment.
