Aria Borealis Bodø Sessions

Students, professionals, amateurs and interested visitors from Norway and abroad are invited to participate in an abundance of activities throughout the festival. We warmly welcome singers and instrumentalists of all ages and on all levels who are looking for new inspiration, as well as new friends and experiences, framed by the stunning nature of the arctic north.

As a Session member, you can enjoy masterclasses for singers, string players, flutists, recorder players, oboists, lutenists, harpsichordists, and ensembles, as well as workshops on improvisation, ensemble singing, basso continuo realization, baroque dance, sámi joik, and Timani. On top of that, we are delighted to be able to offer an exclusive opportunity to experience Stefan Herheim at work in the workshop Scenic interpretation. Additionally, you have free entrance to all the concerts at the festival, including the competition performances, and the added exclusive possibility to follow all the competition rehearsals. If you still have time for more and would like to jam it out with new friends, we’ll happily put you in contact with like-minded peers for spontaneous chamber music sessions and maybe even a pop-up concert or two.

If you prefer not to sing or play yourself, you’re very welcome to be a Session Observer, rather than a Session Active member. All Session members may enjoy the meals we have at the Stormen Concert Hall, alongside jury members, tutors, fellow participants, singers from the competition, and other festival artists. For lunch, we provide sandwiches or a salad, and for dinner we’ll offer environmentally friendly vegetarian and pescatarian food (without meat but with delicious fish). You may opt out of this, but please look closely into the price level on food in Norway before you do so to avoid unpleasant surprises…

Also, be sure not to miss our late-night excursion on Tuesday, June 28 - a hunt for the midnight sun and breathtaking views. The trip is included in all Sessions options.  It will be planned according to the weather forecast and will not be strenuous. You also have the extra choice of booking two unforgettable mini-expeditions with RIBs (Rigid Inflatable Boats), either to experience the magnificent maelstrom of Saltstraumen, sea eagles and other grand nature encounters, or to enjoy the magical midnight sun with the late night option! (Find more information on the front page). We also hope you’ll reserve a seat at the celebratory banquet after the prize ceremony on Saturday July 2. See below for the various rates

To apply

You’ll find our entry form here - please enter before May 1

When you’ve filled in your contact details, please select your instrument/voice type and whether you’ll enter alone or together with friends. Note that everyone in the ensemble will need to submit their own form.

Select your level from these three options:

  • Beginner

You know your way around the instrument/how to sing in tune, but you need to keep it simple

  • Intermediate

You are not a music student or a professional, but you have a lot of experience and enjoy a challenge

  • Advanced

You are or have been a music student at conservatory level (not necessarily specialising in Early Music) and/or are currently working as a musician or music teacher

Wind instruments need to be in 415 Hz, string players are free to use modern instruments, but with Baroque bow and gut strings for at least the two top strings.

Don’t miss the opportunity to perform in Stefan Herheim’s workshop on scenic interpretation. Please submit a video of the aria you’d like to perform with your application. We’ll then let you know if you’re one of the lucky ones. Hot tip: choose an aria with some dramatic potential!

The meals are included in the fee. If you plan on eating with us, all you need to do is to make us aware of any dietary requirements. If you choose to register without included meals, you can tick the box in the form to opt out. The celebration banquet on Saturday, July 2 is not included, so please tick the relevant box if you’d like to join us for the banquet. We hope to see you there!

Fees

Please see above for fees for the different Sessions options. The reduced price is our generous offer of 50% off for a limited number of students or singers who entered the singing competition without reaching the top. All you need is to submit your Student ID proof or a PDF of your confirmation email from the competition with the entry. Just be quick to secure your spot!

A deposit of NOK 1 000 is payable with your application. With your confirmation letter, you’ll receive an invoice for the balance which will be due June 1. The deposit is refundable if the course is cancelled or if your selected Sessions option is full, and you don’t accept any other alternatives offered.

If you have any questions or need further information, please contact us at  info@ariaborealis.com.

What happens next

Application deadline is May 1, For most participants it’s first come, first served, but not for the jurors’ classes. For those you need to submit a short video of yourself together with the application. It doesn't need to be elaborate or of an extremely high recording quality. It’s just a question of getting to know you a little. Note that  the capacity for all Session Active packages is limited, so we advise you to be quick if you’d like to secure your participation before all places are sold out. By May 6, we will inform you whether you’ve got a spot or not, and subsequently you will have to confirm and pay the balance by May 15.
